New blog name and other major changes
If you have visited my site before, you may notice that the blog name and domain have changed. If you came here through a link, hopefully, the redirection from bikecraft.net to engineeredandgeared.com went smoothly. The domain changed last Friday night, and unfortunately, the 301 redirections didn’t work at all for a couple of hours. Hopefully, that didn’t cause you any harm. If you were met with a big juicy 404 error page, sorry for that!
I have been busy with the change and the site is still undergoing some changes, but I should get it to its final form by the end of the week. This announcement will be this week’s only post because I want to get the blog to its final form before working on any new posts.
Why change the blog name?
Changing the name has been on my mind for quite a while now. I never really liked how BikeCraftNetwork sounded and it doesn’t really roll on your tongue nicely. Additionally, the name was kind of restricting and didn’t really give me a whole lot of topics to talk about. After nearly 6 months I have finally figured out better what I wanted to post about, and unfortunately, the name wasn’t really fitting anymore.
To clarify, I will not be making a complete turnaround with the topics. At this point that would be kind of silly anyway. This blog will always be mostly about bicycles, just with a broader spectrum of topics. To give you an example, I’m planning on posting more about the technical side of cycling. I’m studying to be an engineer after all, and any extra practice won’t hurt! From time to time there might be posts about other sports too, such as running, but the focus will be on sports only. If I ever feel like wandering onto some completely different topics not related to sports, I might as well create a second blog.
What has changed?
First and foremost, the appearance of the site will be seeing some tweaks here and there. I have tweaked the color theme a bit just to give the blog a fresh look. The current logo is temporary until I figure out something more fitting in its place, or create a better quality version of the design. You might notice there’s a new category on the header bar called Engineering (might change to engineering explained/simplified etc). This category is for talking about all sorts of physics and science related to cycling. I’m still deciding whether I want to launch another category for 3D modeling, we’ll see.
You may also notice that “Guides” and “Do It Yourself” categories have vanished, and been merged into a single “Tutorials” category. I needed to clear up the header bar to make room for new categories and the “Guides” category only had four posts in it anyway. The posts are still there, no posts were deleted during the blog name change.
My to-do list:
- Tweak appearance — Partially done
- Update about me page and social media profiles — Still needs to be done
- Improve blog performance — Working on it
- Create a twitter account for Engineered and Geared — Still needs to be done
- Be more active on my social media accounts — I’ll try my best!
I need your help!
In the past few days after the domain change, I have tried my best to go through all the possible links on my site. It seems I managed to fix the internal links on the first try, but I may have missed something. Therefore, I would really appreciate it if you reported any broken links/other bugs to me! I’ll get them fixed as soon as possible, and any help is appreciated.
Also, feel free to give me feedback on the new appearance! I’m totally open to suggestions and would love to hear what people think of the new look of my blog.
I think that’s all for now. Thanks for reading, come back next week for a full post!
