Do It Yourself — Simple Camera Stand for Smartphones
Nowadays, most people have a smartphone with a decent camera on it. For someone on a budget, it’s an affordable way to get some third person shots of themselves riding. However, it might be tricky to set up the camera and get the angle right, but luckily making this camera stand for your smartphone is easy and costs you less than 5€. As it’s made out of a bottle it’s also easy to carry in a regular bottle cage.
You don’t need many tools for making the camera stand. The tools you need are:
- Box cutter
Start by measuring the width of your smartphone (including the case if you have one).
Draw a cross at the bottom of the bottle. Use the cross as a center line to draw another cross which is slightly wider than your phone’s width.
Extend the lines on the sides. I made the cut 3 cm deep which seems to work well for a phone with 5.2″ display. If you want more options for adjusting the horizontal angle, you can make one slot straight and the second one slightly canted.
Use the hacksaw and box cutter to cut along the lines. The bottom part is much harder so you need the hacksaw for cutting into it. However, I recommend making all the cuts to the bottom of the bottle before cutting any further, since the bottle loses lots of its rigidity after a slot has been cut into it. I learned this the hard way.
Cut out all the slots and done, for indoor use it works just fine now. However, for making it more practical on the trails I recommend doing the following:
Get a bolt, wingnut and some washers.
Cut off the nozzle part from the cap.
Attach the bolt as shown. Thanks to the bolt you can now just stick the camera stand into the ground. It’s a good idea to turn the bolt the other way around when the bottle is in the bottle cage, just to avoid stabbing yourself in case you have a crash.
Finished camera stand
Cost of the project: Free if you have an old bottle lying around
