Let’s say you are on an extremely tight budget and you only got 5€ to spare for now. Is there anything you could do or get for such a little money? Here are my top five ways to improve your mountain bike for less than 5€.
1. Wash your bike
This is obvious, but seriously. A clean bike is gonna ride better than a dirty one. Keeping your bike clean also helps the seals and bearings to last longer, often way longer. The best part is that it’s completely free unless you want to get some fancier bike specific products. Just remember that there’s nothing wrong with a good old sponge and a bucket full of warm soapy water.
2. Grease it up
This one is obvious too, but nothing that you can fix for this cheap slows you down more than poorly lubed chain or extra friction from hubs and bottom bracket, you get the idea. A small bottle of basic chain lube or grease can be bought for less than 5$. There is much fancier stuff out there, but even the most basic lube will get the job done better than none.
3. New gear cables
Especially if your existing cables are old, new gear cables will help bring back that crispness the gear changes once had. Who doesn’t want that?
4. Silicone grips
Chinese made silicone grips can be bought online for less than 5$. Despite their price, they have turned out to be surprisingly durable and comfortable. Comfort is, of course, a personal preference and these might be too soft for some, but they do a great job at absorbing small vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted to your hands. After four months and multiple crashes later they don’t show any sign of wear or tear. Compared to lock-on grips they are also very light. If your current grips are particularly chunky you might save over 100 grams with these grips! Granted, you lose the ability to take off your grips quickly but how often do you do that anyway? For the money, these grips are one of my favorite way to improve your mountain bike!

5. New bottle cages
Fairly lightweight and durable bottle cages can be bought online for easily less than 5$. Whether you just want to lose a few grams over your current aluminum cages or just want to replace the worn out plastic bottle cages, there are quite a few models sold online. Some of which are so cheap that you can get a pair for less than 5$. I have tried two different models and they have proved to be durable and functional. The model shown in the picture is one my favorite ones. A bottle is easy to pull out it, yet it holds it firmly. I’m still to lose a bottle after switching to these cages.
